  • [1] EU Says Ready for Normalisation with Rump Yugoslavia

    LUXEMBOURG, April 22 - European Union states reaffirmed on Monday they were ready for normal relations with rump Yugoslavia if it respected human rights and guaranteed refugees a right of return. ``The development of German-Serbian and European-Serbian relations will depend on how Belgrade complies with these conditions,'' German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel told reporters. Germany last week recognised Serbia-Montenegro, the rump state remaining from the break-up of former Yugoslavia. The EU collectively has also said Belgrade must grant a large degree of autonomy to the province of Kosovo. (Courtesy of Reuters)

    [2] Protesters Lobby EU on Kosova

    LUXEMBOURG, April 22 - More than 1,000 demonstrators from Kosova noisily protested outside a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday after several EU states recognised rump Yugoslavia, Reuter reported. The protestors from Kosova chanted slogans in favour of self- determination and carried placards saying failure to grant them independence was a ``black mark'' against democratic Europe. Last Week the European Parliament decided in Strasbourg to convene an international conference on Kosova under the aegis of the European Union. Parliament members also asked EU states not to re-establish diplomatic relations with Belgrade before negotiations were opened between Belgrade and the representatives of the Kosova Albanians.     [3] Weizsaecker Visits Albania

    TIRANA, April 22 - Visiting Former German President Richard von Weizsaecker told his his Albanian counterpart Sali Berisha that the Albanians are among the founding peoples of Europe and the future of Europe is unthinkable without them. During his 10-day visit, Weizsaecker will meet with university scholars and will tour several districts of the country. (Albanian Times)

    [4] Government Honors Killed Air Force Personnel

    TIRANA, April 22 - Albanian government has honored 27 pilots and other air force personnel killed in military or humanitarian missions since the end of World War Two, by proclaiming them "Martyrs of Homeland." "Their deeds were left in obscurity by the dictatorial regime," a government statement said Monday. (Albanian Times)

    [5] Albania Approves Fund for Balkan Accord

    TIRANA, April 22 - Albanian government has responded to an OSCE call by allocating a fund to be used for the implementation of the Dayton peace accord for the Balkans, Radio Tirana said. There was no word on where the money was coming from and how much was involved. (Albanian Times)
