ANALIPSI

The seaside village of Analipsi is built on a small, fertile plain 9 km northwest of Hora. It was named after the chapel of Analipsi, which is built at the village's end. The village is of great archaeological interest, as invaluable findings were discovered in the area. In the location of the chapel of Agia Varvara remarkable mosaics from the 5th century were found, as well as monolithic columns. Near the village, excavations brought to light a Roman swimming pool with beautiful mosaics of the Hellenistic Era, in beautiful blue colourings. A few kilometers outside the village stands the Monument construction in honour of the French Captain Bigon who helped eliminate the pirates who were raiding the island. Opposite the port of Analipsi, one can see the islets of Koutsomitis, Sirna, Diforia, Hondro and Ligno which can be trained by boat. From the area of Analipsi, one can visit the Monastery of Panagia Poulariani, as well as the cave of the same name.

ASTIPALAIA

Astipalaia, or Astipalia, is the island's capital and lies on its southeast side. It is built on a hillside. Its picturesque houses spread all along the waterfront, with the imposing castle on the top of the hill. The nicely decorated facades of the houses, are painted blue and white. The nine windmills are the town's characteristic feature, and they complement its beauty. In Astipalaia, there is a small Archaeological Collection housed in "Narkisseios Municipal Library". One should visit the castle on the top of the hill where the Church of Panagia Portaitissa also stand, the monasteries of Agios Ioannis and Agia Livia and the Castle of St John, also stand.

LIVADI

The beautiful village of Livadi is situated 3 km south of Hora, built in a fertile valley full of gardens. The houses, built on picturesque streets, are clean, with well-preserved gardens which maintain many elements of traditional architecture. From Livadi, one should visit the Negri Cave by boat.
