Kimolos lies on the south-eastern side of the Cyclades. It is divided from Milos by a narrow opening of 5.5/10 of a mile. It is 39.5 sq km in area and is 86 nautical miles from Piraeus. This mountainous and barren island is completely covered by hills. Kimolos was known for its chalk mines (kimolia=chalk). Chalk was used for making porcelain. Its climate is dry and very healthy but the soil does not favour cultivation. Its 1,500 inhabitants are mainly engaged in fishing and stock-breeding. They are open-hearted and hospitable people and are doing the best they can for visitors to their island.
