Since antiquity men of letters have flourished in Andros. The neoplatonic philosopher Proklos taught here and Michail Psellos founded the Philosophical Academy. The locals have taken great care of their cultural inheritance. They built three museums with objects of art and old naval collections and also found several local cultural societies. The Unknown Sailor Society organises festivals with local dances, meetings with naval themes, theatrical performances and poetic nights all year round.
