Andros is a typical Cycladic island with arches, narrow alleyways, uphill roads, and snow-white houses. The neoclassical mansions of the shipowners contribute to the pronounced personality of Hora. Since antiquity men of letters have flourished in Andros. The neoplatonic philosopher Proklos taught here and Michail Psellos founded the Philosophical Academy. The locals have taken great care of their cultural inheritance. They built three museums with objects of art and old naval collections and also found several local cultural societies. The Unknown Sailor Society organises festivals with local dances, meetings with naval themes, theatrical performances and poetic nights all year round. Andriots, being people of culture, know the value of traditions and maintain their manners and customs in every aspect of their lives.
