Amorgos is a typical Cycladic island. Its white-washed one-storeyed houses cast sparkling reflections on the mountains. The lovely monastery of Panagia Hazoviotissa, also called "Monastery of the One Wall", is literally suspended over the Aegean sea. The island was an important centre of Cycladic civilisation. It was celebrated for its wonderful tunics, with their impressive scarlet colour, whose secret has never been revealed. The people of Amorgos have combined the most beautiful customs of all the nations which have inhabited their island. One feels the devotion on Good Friday or the triumph of the Easter service deeply in Amorgos. After Easter service, the priest knocks three times on the church's door, as a symbol for the admittance of the faithful to the kingdom of heaven. On Easter Sunday, the burning of a straw effigy of Judas takes place. The women wear the "foundades", white embroidered headpieces, they cut the "pavloi", Easter loafs, and give them out to everyone present. The other religious feasts have a festive character as well and the islanders celebrate them for days on end.
