G.N.T.O. - Greek Islands

The Prefecture of Hania is at the westernmost part of the island and occupies an area of nearly 2400 square kilometers. The terrain is mountainous and the vegetation dense with oak, pine and chestnut trees. The steep mountains, home to the famous Gorge of Samaria, come down to the sea to form beautiful beaches, like Agia Roumeli, Sfakia and Sougia. In the north of the Prefecture, protected on three sides by the White Mountains, is the large plain of Hania, where olive trees, orange groves and vines grow abundant. Hania, beyond its natural beauty it is also home to a wealth of archaeological and historical treasures. In the city of Hania, the capital of the Prefecture, a visit of the Archaeological museum is a must, as is one to the Crete Naval Museum. Nearby, the tomb of the Venizelos family, offering spectacular views of the city is a famous site, and Fragokastello is a testament to the Venetian past of the area.
