The traditional architecture of Chios differs from that of the other eastern Aegean islands. In Chios town and Kambos they used to build big, well-made houses, as the affluent inhabitants wanted to show off, while in the southern areas the medieval villages rise, having an obvious fortress style with peculiar planning. In the poorest villages on the northern side, the architecture becomes simpler and assumes a popular style. The Chians are a people with various historical origins. Consequently, their local customs also vary according to the different seasons of the year. New Year's Eve in Chios town revives the custom of "Santa Claus" small boats, or "evlogies" at the big public square. In Thimiana, on Shrove Sunday, there is the festival of Mostra, where young people dance "talimi", holding swords, representing the expulsion of the pirates, while in Kalamoti, on the same day, they dance "deto", which is a dance coming from the old tradition of the village. In Mesta, on Shrove Monday evening, an old custom is revived, the "Aga's Trial", while on Easter night, "Judas" is burnt. On the pier of Chios town, there is "Kosmiko". This small coffee shop is the "meeting point of the musucians". Traditional instrument players as well as other musicians, even those who are on tour on the island, form "takimia" and the "customer" finds them there and invites them to play at feasts, weddings or festivals. The inhabitants of Volissos are very good dancers and "thioli" is their famous local dance for the Carnival. In Pirgi, on August 15th, they dance the famous "pirgousikos", a dance dedicated to the Virgin. Chios has also cultivated some significant literary and artistic personalities, such as the great Greek linguist Yannis Psycharis, the satyrical poet Georgios Souris and the great national "teacher", Adamandios Korais.
