State Department: Serbia-Montenegro - Travel Warning, November 25, 1998

Serbia-Montenegro - Travel Warning
November 25, 1998

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens against travel to and around Serbia's southern province of Kosovo. While there is a cease-fire in Kosovo, the potential for rapid change in the security situation there remains high. Tension between Serb authorities and ethnic Albanians continues unabated and there are frequent reports of armed clashes in the region.

Members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) issued an activation order October 13, 1998 in preparation for military action in the event the Belgrade government fails to fully comply with United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1199. Implementation of this order is being held in abeyance by NATO and NATO remains concerned about compliance with UNSCR 1199 by both sides to the conflict.

For further information on travel to Serbia-Montenegro, consult the latest Department of State Consular Information Sheet for Serbia-Montenegro.

This supersedes the Travel Warning dated October 27, 1998 to reflect the current security situation.
