State Department: Serbia-Montenegro - Consular Information Sheet, April 12, 1999

Serbia-Montenegro - Consular Information Sheet
April 12, 1999

TRAVEL WARNING: The Department of State warns U.S. citizens against travel to Serbia-Montenegro and strongly urges U.S. citizens in Serbia-Montenegro to depart the country without delay due to military operations being conducted by members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The U.S. Embassy suspended operations and all official Americans departed Serbia-Montenegro as of March 23. There is no U.S. diplomatic presence in Serbia-Montenegro to provide normal consular protective services there to U.S. citizens. Given recent history in the region, the possibility exists that U.S. citizens could be singled out in sporadic acts of violence, even though the government of Serbia-Montenegro has offered assurances no retaliatory actions would be taken against U.S. citizens.

EMBASSY LOCATION/REGISTRATION: The U.S. Embassy suspended operations and all official Americans departed Serbia-Montenegro as of March 23. The U.S. government is not able to provide consular services, such as registration, to U.S. citizens in Serbia-Montenegro.

As there is no diplomatic presence in Serbia-Montenegro, the Department is unable to provide information on current conditions in Serbia-Montenegro.

This replaces the August 26, 1998 Consular Information Sheet to add the Travel Warning for Serbia-Montenegro and to note the suspension of Embassy operations in Serbia-Montenegro.
