State Department: Serbia-Montenegro - Travel Warning, March 5, 1999

Serbia-Montenegro - Travel Warning
March 5, 1999

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens against travel to and around Serbia9s southern province of Kosovo. While international effort to reach a peace agreement continues, the potential for rapid change in the security situation remains high. Tension between Serb authorities and ethnic Albanians continues unabated and there are frequent reports of armed clashes in the region.

On March 6, the Department of State allowed the return to Serbia- Montenegro of those U.S. Embassy Belgrade personnel and family members who had been authorized to depart the country on February 19.

American citizens remaining in Serbia-Montenegro should contact the Embassy in Belgrade for up-to-date information on security conditions. The Embassy is located at Kneza Milosa 50, Belgrade: telephone (381) (11) 645-655.

This supersedes the Travel Warning for Serbia-Montenegro dated February 19, 1999 to reflect the current security situation and note the Department of State9s decision to allow Embassy Belgrade personnel and their dependents to return to Serbia-Montenegro.
