STATEMENT BY MARGARET TUTWILER/SPOKESMAN
CYPRUS: TERRORIST THREATS
WE HAVE RECENTLY RECEIVED INFORMATION FROM SEVERAL SOURCES ABOUT
THE POSSIBILITY OF TERRORIST ATTACKS IN CYPRUS.
WHILE THESE THREATS ARE BEING ASSESSED, THE U.S. EMBASSY FOLLOWED
ROUTINE PROCEDURE AND REQUESTED AND RECEIVED TEMPORARY INCREASES IN
THE SECURITY PRESENCE PROVIDED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF CYPRUS.
ALTHOUGH WE HAVE NO INFORMATION ON A SPECIFIC TERRORIST THREAT TO
TRAVELERS TO CYPRUS AND AMERICANS RESIDENT THERE AT THIS TIME, THE
PUBLIC SHOULD BE AWARE THAT THESE UNSPECIFIED THREATS HAVE BEEN
RECEIVED. SHOULD SPECIFIC AND CREDIBLE INFORMATION ON ANY THREAT TO
THE AMERICAN PUBLIC BE RECEIVED, THE DEPARTMENT WILL, OF COURSE,
PROVIDE SUCH INFORMATION TO TRAVELERS AND OTHER CONCERNED PARTIES.
